The ESRB describes Saints Row 2 with the following phrases: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Content, Strong Language, and Use of Drugs. I'm happy to say that, at least in this case, the ESRB wasn't being generous. No, they were actually being pretty damn reserved. Saints Row 2 exceeds every single one of those descriptors in pretty much any way possible.
This is a game that's so wildly over the top, it's enough to make the GTA:SA Hot Coffee "scandal" look mild in comparison. And you know what? The game is all the better for it. Just like movies, not every game has to be high art. Sometimes you're simply in the mood for a big, shiny, Bruckheimer-esque, explosion fest. That's exactly what Saints Row 2 promises and exactly what it delivers.
Set five years after the first game, it picks up where the original abruptly ended. After getting blown the fuck up you've spent the intermediate years laying in a coma in a prison hospital. Due to the miracles of modern science (aka an incredibly flexible character creator) you can recreate yourself however you like. This includes anything from a svelte, stocking clad working girl to a morbidly obese man with fat rolls so large they hide the thong he is attempting to wear.
Sadly, I had to spend half-an-hour looking at such a creation when Duke and I sat down for some co-op for the first time. The poor guy grabbed a random character and, well, let's just say it wasn't pretty.

Thank you for making Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. I appreciate that it is (primarily) true to its source material. I am impressed with how you’ve managed to take the World of Warcraft formula, tweak it, slap a nicer coat of paint over it, and somehow ensnare me and maintain my interest. My general revulsion for the aforementioned MMO should have served as sufficient vaccine against your infectious game, but no. For yours is well-crafted, sirs.
Let me begin by commending the user interface. It is clean, efficient, and streamlines most of the nonsense in MMOs right out. Looking for groups is easier than ever, and the ability to refer others to your group leader for an invitation is a brilliant addition. Easy buttons for joining PvP scenarios and local teams keep the game operating at a good pace. You have taken many of the complaints I have had about the interfaces of MMOs for over a decade now and worn away all the rough edges.
The way you have balanced the factions against one another, with classes effectively mirrored (albeit with some pleasant tweaks to reflect the character of the faction), operates more smoothly than I had expected. Indeed, the PvP experience exceeds that of any MMO I have yet to play. It is the first MMO where I have not hated every moment of PvP I played through. Not only is there always a sense of 'agency' in every act I take, but I feel as though I always have a clear role to play, a contribution to make.
Embark on an epic quest to complete the Tome of Knowledge and unlock Warhammer lore, detailed monster information, new abilities, and rewards!
Features
Every aspect of the game – every player, every quest, every encounter, and every battle – can turn the tide of the ongoing war and mean victory for your Realm!
Some call me an urban legend, the last damn hope for humanity, that kid from Vault 101. Others call me a fuckin' commie. And I'm fine with that, as long as I don't hear them say it with their jaw attached. But it doesn't matter how lucky you are, does it? You've seen the Wasteland, this man-made Apocalypse, this sorry-ass excuse of a history lesson we all have to live with. The landscape is dead, vacant, and rusted - a painting of paradise whose colors have faded into the murk of browns, greys, and dusty hues. The wind blows through the windows of the abandoned car, creeps around the corners of the broken street, and spreads the odor of anarchy through the ruins of the Lincoln Memorial.
But you? You're just lucky. Lucky you're still alive. Lucky you can read. Lucky this book hasn't been turned into a carcass of mold like all the other books in this godforsaken hellhole. Lucky I have spare time. Lucky Moira made it worth my while to write this damn introduction for a survival guide. And especially lucky you haven't stepped into Megaton long enough to become Moira's little guinea pig. (And she’s lucky for not editing this out.)
Absolute freedom has bred absolute chaos. Raiders, slavers, mutants, mercs – they all want to rip your head off, and if they’re savvy enough, sell it to the highest bidder. Men are expendable. Women and children conceal weapons underneath their filthy garments. Soldiers weighed down by their metal power suits patrol the wastes like sulking, marauding ghosts. Human “ghouls” who have had their skin ripped off by the radiation live in fear of the smoothskin bigots. Civilization exists in tattered pockets in a world worn with war and natural, mindless cruelty.

Some of you may have already heard reports last month about Circuit City closing 150 of its stores. Well, now it's officially. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Word is: "The chain sought Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Richmond, Virginia, today after suppliers concerned about declining sales at almost 1,500 U.S. and Canadian stores cut off credit and demanded up-front cash for shipments. The company owes $119 million to Hewlett-Packard Co., the world's largest maker of personal computers, and $116 million to Samsung Electronics Co., the top maker of flat-panel displays, according to a filing."

You may or may not have heard about lawsuits popping up, related to EA's recent DRM issues. Last month two new class-action lawsuits were filed against Electronic Arts in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Again, it concerns EA's utilization of SecuROM digital rights management.
According to GamePolitics, one suit, filed by Richard Eldridge of Pennsylvania, is related to SecuROM inclusion in the Spore Creature Creator Free Trial Edition. Richard specified that SecuROM cannot be completely uninstalled and that there were no warnings about the DRM in the EULA.
Another suit is from a Sims player (oh well...). Dianna Cortez of Missouri claims SecuROM caused major issues, which could only be resolved by reformatting her system. She accused EA of "unfair business practices."
Bad publicity people. This SecuROM business was clearly a bad move by EA. It's only a matter of time until more of these lawsuits surface.

"At the moment we've got Fallout 3 for this year and potentially there's a new Elder Scrolls title in 2010," said Oughton. Also, when asked about development for the Nintendo Wii, he replied: "At the moment we're not that interested in the Wii. We're going to stick to PS3, Xbox 360 and PC."
They are obviously gearing up to cast the Elder Scrolls franchise into the massive ocean of MMOGs. You know what, only the very best swimmers can survive in that ocean and last I heard, Blizzard is the best in that department. Also, call me picky, but I'm not very keen on playing an Oblivion-like MMOG.
After announcing Xbox 360 price cuts in the US and all over Europe, it appears Microsoft has not intention of lowering the price of their gaming system any further. At least not some time soon.
"I'm not dropping the price for many many years in the future, I would suspect," says MS UK head of gaming and entertainment Stephen McGill. "We've obviously just reduced the price and that's because we can pass the costs reductions we have straight on to consumers," McGill explained. "I'm not going to speculate where [the price] might go in five or ten years time." "It's great value," he added. "And I think the value not only comes from the price of the console but the content."
“Company of Heroes is one of the most critically acclaimed RTS series of all time,” said Peter Matiss, vice president of global brand management, THQ. “With Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor, Relic Entertainment is delivering an all-new, standalone chapter in the franchise and continues to push the boundaries of innovation and quality in the genre.”
Once again, this one is being handled by Relic Entertainment. The game utilizes the developer's in-house Essence Engine and word is that the game is "fully compatible with Company of Heroes and Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts," allowing players who own the entire series complete access to the epic battles of World War II."Expect Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor to hit stores during Spring 2009.
Looks like we'll have two demos this week, people. The demo for the PC version of Eidos Interactive's Tomb Raider: Underworld is going to arrive this Friday, as we've already reported.
Today we've also learned that a playable demo for DICE's upcoming parkour inspired action game, Mirror's Edge, will be available for download tomorrow. Here's the word:
This week gamers can ‘take a leap of Faith’ with a special demo for Mirror’s Edge™, available at the PlayStation Store on October 30th and on Xbox LIVE™ Marketplace on October 31st. The demo will feature the prologue of the game, a tutorial and a segment of the single-player story mode.
According to this report, Team17 -- once one of the most renowned developers for the long forgotten Amiga platform -- are now apparently working on a new Alien Breed game. Alien Breed was a popular top-down action shooter back in 1991, which, as you may have guessed (or if you can remember that far back), was inspired by the Aliens movie. Two years later the game made it to PCs. Now, Team17 studio director Martyn Brown stated that a new Alien Breed title has been in development for several months and is expected to arrive next year.
"I think it's safe to say that it's perhaps one of the larger indie digital titles to date and has pretty high production values."
"It's something we've always wanted to do, and despite being exceptionally close on a number of occasions to getting the right deal on various platforms, it never worked out. Fortunately sci-fi action is back in fashion, and we look forward to delivering Alien Breed - the details of which may surprise a few people when we cough them out."
Speaking as an Amiga veteran, yes, I definitely remember this one. Used to play it like crazy back then.
By now most of you probably heard about ads cropping up all over the US capital for Bethesda's Fallout 3 (PC/360/PS3). Most of the ads were spotted in the DC Metro. Lately, these ads triggered negative responses from certain people, who seem more than concerned about seeing post-apocalyptic images of the city and its historical sights such as the Washington Monument and the Capitol Dome.
"The people of our city do not need a daily reminder that Washington is a prime target for an attack," said Joseph Anzalone in a letter to the editor of the Washington Post (spotted by GP). "We do not need a daily reminder of what our worst fears look like," he added. "Since any First Amendment objection would be irrelevant (the ads do not present a true viewpoint or political message and would therefore not be protected), there is no reason for these ads to be part of our daily panorama."
He appeals to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, asking them to employ better judgment as to what is displayed in the city's transportation system.
GP points out that this is a matter of opinion and highlights that this guy, Anzalone, is a bit hazy on the US Constitution. The ads are protected by the First Amendment and fall under free speech.
Ubisoft just announced that their long awaited shooter sequel Far Cry 2 has arrived to stores.
"From the beginning, we've set out to create a truly dynamic, open-world experience in Far Cry 2," said Tony Key, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Ubisoft. "Our team has focused on pulling players into the realistic African landscape to allow them to fully immerse themselves in the game's riveting conflict. We're confident that we've created not only one of the most remarkable shooters in recent years, but also one of the year's best games."
The FPS has an ESRB of "M" for Mature and carries the price of $59.99. You may find the game in Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC variants.
Blizzard Entertainment made another major announcement at the company's annual BlizzCon. Their approaching real-time strategy StarCraft 2 is actually going to assume the form of a trilogy, each consisting of a different campaign. The campaigns are, in fact, separate games, as Blizzard unveiled.
The first is the Terran campaign called "Terrans: Wings of Liberty." The second focuses on the Zerg and will be named "Zerg: Heart of the Swarm," while the third game is going to carry the title "Protoss: Legacy of the Void."
According to Blizzard's Rob Pardo each campaign will be very different. It also appears that the Zerg campaign will be featuring RPG elements, whereas the Protoss includes elements of diplomacy. Finally, the Terran campaign will contain a Protoss mini-campaign.
Each game includes an epic storyline, presumably with enough content to warrant a full release. For that reason, the games are going to have more cinematics and story content. In addition, each game is going to offer approximately 26-30 missions.
Blizzard's Pardo explained how this was a necessary move to maintain the quality of the product and a good alternative to actually delaying the project's release for a long time.
Whatever, guys. By the way, I have to congratulate Blizzard. It's an ingenious way to keep milking a franchise, don't you think? Korean gamers will be buying it like crazy, for starters.
BlizzCon 2008 has started and the first reports from the show are already coming in. Blizzard Entertainment finally reveals another character class from the upcoming action RPG, Diablo III. Apart from the Witch Doctor and Barbarian, players will also be able to choose the Wizard class.
More info on this is sure to come, but for now here's a word from the folks at Diii.net:
"During the show, Blizzard Entertainment also unveiled the game’s third playable class: the wizard. A wielder of the elements and a master manipulator of time, the wizard can hurl environment-shattering lightning bolts, channel explosive arcane energies, and create pockets of space outside the normal temporal flow. BlizzCon attendees were able to adventure as either the wizard or the previously unveiled barbarian or witch doctor, battling alone or with up to three other players through the catacombs beneath Tristram Cathedral to a final showdown with the Skeleton King.
